Organization Triangle Prescribed Burn Association
by Rosanne Hessmiller last modified Jun 27, 2025 02:08 PM — filed under: , , , , , ,
The Triangle Prescribed Burn Association (TPBA) is a group of like-minded individuals in the Triangle area across 5 counties (Orange, Alamance, Person, Durham, and Chatham) that come together to use fire as a tool for ‘Best Land Management Practices’ to restore the land and to advocate for people willing to support our effort. Our ultimate goal is to reduce the number of wildfires in our state. We do this by working with local land owners and managers to help plan, prepare, and conduct prescribed burns.

Organization Apalachicola NERR

This gem of natural diversity that we call the Apalachicola River and Bay System rivals some the most remote places on earth for sheer sense of wilderness. Although the Reserve itself is a relatively small parcel, it is connected in a sprawling watershed that traverses three states and covers nearly 20,000 square miles. The upper reaches of the basin begin about 90 miles above Atlanta, where the Chattahoochee originates as a small mountain stream. Flowing south for 436 miles it meets the 350 mile long Flint River at the Florida state line. Below this point we call the river Apalachicola as it stretches 107 miles to the Gulf of Mexico.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has assumed a leadership role in the use of fire to maintain and support healthy ecosystems. The Service has traditionally led DOI agencies in using prescribed fire to reduce dangerously overgrown vegetation, known as "hazardous fuels," keeping lands in good condition while accomplishing the most with the least funding.
