The purpose of the workshop is to introduce a new way of evaluating changes to ecosystems and allows technical experts to evaluate the tool, design, and functionality. This new tool is one of the final research products generated as a result of a three-year collaboration between the Appalachian LCC and the U.S. Forest Service Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center. It offers key resources for assessing and interpreting landscape change to aid natural resource managers, planners, and spatial data analysts in integrating assessments of ecosystem services in their efforts locally and regionally. The tools and resources provide information and tools that fully integrate society’s value of ecosystems with future threats to better inform landscape planning and management. This workshop will:
- Show how LanDat can be used to map critical forests, river systems and other natural areas that support ecosystem services (e.g., forest carbon storage, wildlife habitat, clean water) in the Appalachians;
- Demonstrate LanDAT’s application to local and regional monitoring and planning; and
- Provide in-depth discussion and exploration of the LanDAT website and data products.
