Vulnerabilities to Climate Change of Northeast Fish and Wildlife Habitats, Phase II
Vulnerabilities to Climate Change of Northeast Fish and Wildlife Habitats, Phase II
This project completed three assessments of the vulnerability of terrestrial, aquatic, and coastal habitats (ecosystems) to climate change, including sea level rise. One assessment evaluated 13 terrestrial and wetland habitat types, the second evaluated cold water stream habitats, and the third evaluated coastal habitats. A database of coastal climate change projects and tools was also developed.
This project built off a first phase of work funded by Northeast states through the Regional Conservation Needs program, in which a habitat vulnerability model was developed and run on three northeastern forested habitat types. In this second phase, model assessments of vulnerability to climate change were extended to include seven to ten additional northeastern habitat types, including forests, wetlands, and aquatic systems. Tidally-influenced habitat vulnerability was also assessed and included development of a database of ongoing coastal climate change projects and tools.
The project will also build capacity in the Northeastern states for Regional Vulnerability Assessments and will coordinate with NOAA in the development of an on-line catalog of coastal climate change assessments.

Final reports for the terrestrial, aquatic, and coastal assessments have undergone peer review and are posted below. The peer review summaries are available for both the Cold Water Habitat and Sea Level Rise vulnerability reports. The coastal database (NEclimateUS.org) also has been developed in collaboration with NOAA and other partners.
On December 20th, 2011, Hector Galbraith and Lesley Sneddon gave a webinar on their respective vulnerability assessments, which can be viewed here.
