Overview and Wildfire Resources
The Southeast has a complex fire environment unlike any other in the nation. While fire has long played a critical role in the landscape and ecosystems across the Southeast, it is becoming increasingly difficult for agencies, organizations, and landowners to plan for and respond effectively to wildfire, while protecting vulnerable communities and providing for firefighter safety. The Southeast leads the nation in the number of annual wildland fire ignitions but also in the number of prescribed burns. The most prescribed burning activity in the nation occurs in Florida, Georgia and Alabama, and this activity gives agencies, partners and communities the best tool available for combating wildfire risk. Wildfire risk is expected to increase significantly as our climate continues to get hotter and development continues in the wildland-urban interface. As these changes occur, pre-fire planning, training and staffing will only become more important.
