Forested watersheds in the southeastern U.S. provide unique and valuable resources, including the production of clean water. These forests are often managed specifically to maintain such services in addition to other objectives. Prescribed fire is a common and powerful tool for that management. Field and experimental studies were conducted in 2019 to assess the environmental impact of prescribed fire at the landscape scale, and to isolate drivers of post-fire response. Kipling will discuss the results of this project including observed changes to nutrients in subsurface water. He will also include experimental data suggesting how burn severity might affect water quality due to surface run-off.
